Villa Melati in Ubud, Bali
The enchanting Villa Melati is perched upon the Sayan Ridge in the traditional Balinese village of Kedewatan, Ubud. The style is elegant and romantic, presenting tropical living at its very best, a haven for nature lovers, as this rainforest retreat offers magnificent views of the Ayung River, river gorge and lush green rice fields. The graceful architecture of this thatched hideaway is essentially Balinese.
The property is constructed of traditional local materials, with contemporary style incorporated into the high-quality fixtures and fittings. Designed to harmonies with the environment, the pavilions and viewing balconies offer a blend of open-air living and air-conditioned comfort. The colonial-style furniture is complemented by traditional batik fabrics and antique artefacts, while the terraced gardens incorporate a delightful lookout pavilion, a converted rice barn, and a water-garden of cascading ornamental pools.
The villa’s two main bedrooms each have a king-size bed, walk in dressing room and en-suite bathroom with a private attached tropical garden, each of identical design and located on the ground level. Both have air-conditioning as well as ceiling fans – the ceilings are very high, and the climate of Ubud is relatively cool, so the ceiling fans are often sufficient. Each bedroom has huge sliding doors opening onto the lawn that allow guests to admire the jungle vista while curled up in bed. A baby-cot or a child’s bed can be provided.
There is further sleeping accommodation, inside a genuine antique Balinese rice barn. The barn has been fitted with a delightful sleeping loft for two, with a king-size mattress. Both ceiling fan and air-conditioning are provided. Below in a cave, is the barn’s private bathroom, reached by steps. This is ideally suited to younger people, due to the 3 flights of steps up and down between the sleeping area and the bathroom. A novel and intimate experience indeed for the more adventure-spirited of guests.
A fourth sleeping area on the mezzanine floor has two single beds, open space above the kitchen and dining room, and double function as entertainment room, but have no air-conditioner.
The living pavilion enjoys direct access to the stone deck and swimming pool. Furnished with plenty of comfortable daybeds and lounging chairs, this open-air space serves as the perfect vantage point from which to enjoy the excellent view. The indoor dining room seats 8 and is complemented by an outdoor balcony for days when guests wish to enjoy alfresco dining.
As this is normally the owners’ residence, there is a beautiful Golden Retriever living at the villa – she is occasionally accompanied by a friendly little Shi-Tzu. They are fairly well behaved, and are looked after by the staff. It may be possible to arrange for them to be taken elsewhere during a guest’s stay.
